ELECTRIC BLOOD

What even is cyberpunk now? Mostly an aesthetic. I wanted to tap into it for its themes. I'm drawn to this idea of a near-future imperfect, not-quite dystopia, where there's fantastic technology but as Gibson says 'it's not evenly distributed.' I want to write about people who are overlooked by society. In this case, if we’re going to have a self-driving cars -- someone is going to have the shit job of cleaning them.

It's speculative fiction, but on a human-scale. I find writing at that scale is a good place to explore character. In this case two brothers who react very differently when they get in over their head. That said, it’s also got a femme fatale, a fight scene, and some zappy-zappy too.

30 Rock meets The Regime in Somavision! A top TV producer gets recruited into creating a soap opera for a remote dictatorship. Now he has to survive corrupt bureaucrats, deadly revolutionaries, and worst of all, newly-minted celebrities, just to get the program to air and escape with his life. But when he finds out that absolute power lets him make the show of his dreams, will he want to?

This was definitely inspired in part by real live events like the kidnapping of Shin Sang-ok by North Korea as well as playing too much Half Life 2…

Each webisode is based on expert predictions from science and technology fields. I wrote the pilot script for this series, Shattered Coast, which earned Xenophile a $250K grant.
